Education Workhops


Baluji  has been teaching since a young age and has extensive experience of teaching a wide range of people and age groups. Apart from teaching Indian music Baluji has identified many transferable skills which Indian music has to offer especially in the area of listening skills and improvisation. He teaches special needs and differently abled people with whom he has a particular empathy.. He teaches all over the world  giving workshops and residential courses. He has written a thesis on Indian music education  and shares his knowledge with infants and University professors alike!

INDIAN MUSIC APPRECIATION ( from Dhrupad to Dance floor)

Listen to different styles of Indian music.  Identify the instruments and musical elements. Recognise rhythms and patterns. Increase your knowledge and enjoyment of the rich and various music that is called “Indian”. Trace it’s history and evolution.

Learning to play Indian Music.

Workshops can be for instrument, vocal and  percussion. The instruments can be Indian instruments but any other instrument can also be used.  Workshops can be one off events lasting from one hour to all day sessions. They can also take the form of a residency. They can work towards an  informal presentation at the end of the session  or towards a public performance. They can be an end in themselves. The participants do not need to have prior musical knowledge and can be of any age. Special needs groups can also be included.

How does Classical Hindustani Music work? Introduction to melody and rhythm and Indian instruments. Bring your instruments along and sing or play a simple composition.

Indian Singing Intermediate
Learning the  modes and rhythmic cycles for  Hindustani Classical music. Learning a composition with three movements including elements of improvisation.

Suitable for 13 yrs +

Indian Singing Advanced
In depth rendition of a chosen raag in a chosen time cycle.
Suitable for those who have already been studying Hindustani Vocal to intermediate level.

What is Indian singing? Learn to imitate and appreciate Hindustani vocal techniques to extend your vocal abilities.

Learn and improve your sitar playing, listening skills, and improvisational
skills. In depth analysis of technique and musical development.

This is an informal interactive session introducing the instruments with an introduction to the principles of Indian music. If this is to a small group held before the show then participants can touch and hold the instruments. It can take the form of a lecture demonstration for a larger group of people

Workshops and Master Classes  for Musicians.
These are workshops which are more technical in nature and explore the music in greater depth for professional musicians and music students and teachers; orchestras and ensembles from different musical traditions.

An intensive class with attention given fully to one student.

These are held in beautiful retreats for one week or ten days. They involve supervised practice sessions, practical and theory sessions, improvisation and performance .
