Grand Union Orchestra - Trading Roots

Musicians appearing include sitar virtuoso Baluji Shrivastav, tabla maestro Yousuf Ali Khan,  Daniel Louis on steel pans, Carlos Fuentes on Latin-American percussion, charismatic South African Claude Deppa (trumpet, African drums), Australian jazz star Louise Elliott (tenor saxophone, flute) and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Hunt, led by Grand Union's composer/director Tony Haynes (piano, trombone).

Internationally-celebrated world musicians and jazz soloists from the Grand Union Orchestra bring a glittering programme to Turner Sims, with special guests Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra, blending the wide range of musical styles they specialise in.

Sinuous Indian ragas intertwine with Latin-American salsa, Chinese melodies grow spine-tingling jazz harmonies, Bengali and Bollywood songs take on steel pans and reggae bass-lines, West African drumming goes head to head with bhangra - all combined with stunning improvisation and some specially created big band arrangements in an extraordinary exchange of music from around the world.
